How to calculate hours between two times

  1. Turn both times into 24-hour time. For example, 5:30 PM becomes 17:30.
  2. Subtract the start time from the end time. 17:30 minus 9:00 is 8 hours 30 minutes.
  3. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift crossed midnight. Add 24 hours to the end time first.
  4. Subtract any unpaid breaks.
  5. For payroll, convert minutes to decimal hours by dividing by 60. 30 minutes is 0.5 hours, so 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.5 hours.
